Support Groups
Confidential time, location, and content
What is a support group?
Support group is a time for people who have experienced family or domestic violence to come together, share similar experiences, and offer support to one another. The goal of a support group is to help members cope with stressful life events and revitalize and enhance members’ coping ability.
Its easy to get more info about our support groups by calling 919-929-7122, and asking to speak with Ardith.
Each support group is led by two trained facilitators, and usually 3-8 people attend each group. It is in a safe and confident location, and all discussion during group is kept confidential.
FVPC offers two kinds of support groups: drop-in groups, or time-limited groups.
Drop-in group
- Meets once per week, every week
- Once you have met with a facilitator, you can drop in anytime
- A time to get information, share experiences, and gain support
Time-limited group
- Occurs for a set amount of time, usually 8 weeks with the same group of people.
- Before you join this group, you have an opportunity to talk to the facilitators to make sure this is a good fit for you.
- These groups are for women who are interested in making a commitment to 8 weeks, so that each week the group members are the same.
- In addition to talking about DV in general, groups often choose to talk about issues or feelings more in depth, for example anger, self-esteem, safety, how DV affects children, healthy relationships, coping skills, etc.
Examples of other types of groups:
Learning about yourself and your experience through art
Adults who have experienced family violence in their home as children
Healthy relationships and boundary setting
Spanish speaking groups
What do I do now?
Making sense of the domestic violence experience
How can I join?
Call FVPC to schedule a support group meeting with Ardith. You can determine what groups are available that fit your schedule.
The facilitator for the group you’re interested in will meet with you to decide if the support group will be a good fit for you at this time. The facilitator will then give you necessary information about what groups are currently being offered, and the time and location of the appropriate group.
Does it cost anything?
No, support group is free.
What about child care?
FVPC offers free childcare during all support groups. FVPC might also be offering a child support group at the same time.
Is it safe?
Only group members and facilitators know the location of the group. The building is also locked during support group. We do our best to ensure it is a safe environment.
